PSA: Beware of Malicious Files and Fake Builds Following the Latest GTA 6 Leaks
Cybersecurity warnings and community observations highlight an increase in malicious download links and fake builds circulating in the aftermath of recent GTA 6 leaks.
Following the latest leak surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6, security warnings and community observations have highlighted a noticeable uptick in malicious download links and fake files designed to spread malware. Scammers and bad actors have increasingly leaned into the immense public interest surrounding the game, distributing dubious files carrying names such as totallylegitgta6leakedbuild.exe or certainlynotavirusthisisgta6myboy.exe.
While cybersecurity companies have issued cautions regarding similar tactics for months, activity has surged following recent events involving hackers known as Cyberleek. According to observations shared by users on ResetEra and VPN provider NordVPN, various piracy and torrenting sites have seen an increase in links pointing to alleged playable builds or leaked files. Some of these fraudulent links attempt to falsely associate themselves with Cyberleek to deceive users, while separate social media posts have also circulated faked screenshots of alleged leaked builds.
Industry watchers note that this type of predatory behavior is likely to persist and spread in the coming months, particularly as anticipation builds around the console launch scheduled for November 19th, alongside a lack of official announcements regarding a PC version. Observers point out that while tech-savvy players may easily spot these traps, younger children and older relatives remain vulnerable to downloading bogus files in search of early access.
In official developments related to the franchise, the next public look at Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to premiere on Netflix on August 27th, followed by a YouTube release a few hours later. Meanwhile, a separate legal battle involving 34 former Rockstar developers and their studio over firings from last year is approaching its final trial next month.
