GTA 6 Overhauls NPCs, Vehicles, and Gameplay Systems With New Immersion Details

Rockstar is making significant changes to how NPCs behave, how vehicles handle damage, and how players interact with the world in GTA 6. New details reveal NPCs will actively resist crime, damaged cars will perform worse, and first-person mode won't be

Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to deliver substantial changes to core gameplay systems that players have relied on for years. Based on hands-on sessions with creators and new information from Rockstar, the game is introducing mechanics that prioritize immersion and consequence over the accessibility features GTA 5 players grew accustomed to.

One of the most significant shifts involves NPC behavior. NPCs in GTA 6 won't simply run away from armed players. Instead, some will actively attempt to disarm you and intervene. This creates new challenges, especially for players trying to maintain a low profile as criminals. The change extends to NPC detail as well: their physical condition now affects gameplay. A heavier police officer, for example, will run out of breath while chasing Jason, forcing them to stop and recover. This mirrors the stamina system players will need to manage themselves.

Vehicle handling has been fundamentally altered. Players will no longer be able to flip a car upright if it turns over, a mainstay feature in GTA 5. Structural damage now directly impacts how vehicles handle, making collisions consequential rather than recoverable with a simple reset. High-speed pursuits and off-road driving will require careful attention, as damaged engines and other critical components will significantly reduce vehicle performance during critical moments.

Crime and punishment systems have been redesigned with new friction points. When arrested, any cash on hand goes directly to the arresting officers. This makes banks and ATMs essential stops for players who want to protect their earnings. A fence system allows players to convert stolen vehicles into personal transport by changing the pink slip, enabling customization while remaining narratively aligned with the criminal lifestyle.

Combat has been refined with new tactical options. Players can now shoot weak spots on enemies to incapacitate them without lethal force, useful for maintaining a low profile or repairing reputation after violent encounters. A Focus meter manages combat preparation and can be replenished with consumables, adding another resource to manage before dangerous situations.

Quality-of-life changes are largely going in the opposite direction. First-person mode won't be available at launch, though it may be added later as it was in GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. Safehouse transitions won't use loading screens, keeping the world feeling connected rather than segmented. Small details like performing air tricks while diving into water and stealing NPC accessories add player expression and exploration incentives.

NPC interaction has been expanded with contextual dialogue menus featuring substantially more recorded lines, creating more dynamic and varied conversations as players move through Leonidas City. The game also introduces a reputation system where how players handle conflicts and preserve life can influence how law enforcement treats them.

These changes represent Rockstar's effort to deepen immersion and player consequence. While some features remove accessibility, the overall direction emphasizes a world where actions matter, resources require management, and the criminal lifestyle carries real friction. GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with PC coming later.
