GTA 6 Features Over 600,000 Animations, Far Exceeding GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2

According to Rockstar North co-head Aaron Garbut, Grand Theft Auto 6 features over 600,000 animations and a dedicated team art-directing every individual NPC.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is poised to feature over 10 times as many unique animations as Grand Theft Auto 5, according to comments made by Rockstar North co-head Aaron Garbut in an interview with The New York Times. Garbut revealed that the upcoming open-world game includes over 600,000 animations, dwarfing GTA 5's 55,000 and doubling the 300,000 animations featured in Red Dead Redemption 2.

The massive scale in animation count is attributed in part to a dedicated new team at the studio focused entirely on art-directing every single non-player character. Garbut explained that every individual NPC received specific art direction. This meticulous design philosophy extends to the game's environments as well, where developers considered specific interior details such as seating arrangements, drinks, table marks, and wall pictures depicting room occupants with personalized tattoos and family photos.

Alongside the extensive animation and environmental detail, the game's overall footprint boasts a map reportedly three times larger than the map in Red Dead Redemption 2. This unprecedented level of detail and scale lines up with previous industry observations regarding the massive resources and effort Rockstar Games dedicates to building its massive virtual worlds to match the capabilities of contemporary gaming hardware.
