Report Indicates GTA 6 Targeted for 30 FPS Lock on Consoles at Launch

A new report suggests that Grand Theft Auto 6 will run at 30 frames per second on current-generation consoles at launch, with no confirmation yet on a 60 FPS performance mode.

According to a new report, Grand Theft Auto 6 will be capped at 30 frames per second on consoles at launch. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson reportedly stated to content creator Davy Jones during a studio visit that the game is currently running at 30 FPS on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S during development. Nelson noted that the development team still needs to consult with technical staff to determine whether a 60 FPS performance mode will be ready for launch or introduced later.

The report follows the premiere of the GTA 6 Extended Look on Netflix, a roughly 27-minute segment captured on a base PlayStation 5 that ran without visible frame drops. Nelson did not share specific details regarding resolution or technical features such as ray tracing, nor did he commit to specifics regarding how the game will run on the PlayStation 5 Pro. Rockstar has historically launched massive open-world titles at 30 FPS prior to providing higher frame rate options, as seen with GTA 5, while Red Dead Redemption 2 has not received an official 60 FPS patch on current consoles.

GTA 6 is scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC version has not yet been officially announced, though it is expected to follow Rockstar's historical pattern of arriving later. Rockstar has not issued an official public statement regarding the console performance targets as of this writing.
