A new mod for Grand Theft Auto 5 called "Gang Notoriety" attempts to address a long-standing quirk in the game's open world: while police pursue the player across the map, rival gangs typically forget grievances the moment the player leaves their line of sight. The mod introduces a persistent notoriety system where gangs accumulate wanted stars similar to law enforcement, theoretically sustaining hostility until the player loses the heat.
PC Gamer's contributor installed the mod alongside a collection of other modifications and teleported to Grove Street to test the system by opening fire on Ballas members. Initially, the minimap filled with red and orange rings indicating numerous hostile gang members, and a wanted star appeared—though it was unclear whether this originated from the gang system or standard police response to public gunfire.
The situation quickly deviated from expectations. Rather than coordinating against the player, the Ballas began engaging each other, taking cover and exchanging fire. At one point a rottweiler spawned, adding further chaos. Vehicles continued moving through the area unaffected. Eventually the gang members eliminated each other, leaving a single survivor with a high wanted level from a previous mod. The writer concluded the test without a clear resolution, noting the mod's behavior produced unintended infighting rather than sustained pursuit of the player.
The experiment highlights the complexity of modding interconnected AI systems in Rockstar's nearly decade-old title, where multiple modifications can interact in unpredictable ways.
