Gamescom Issues Apology for Initial Response to Indie Developer Hardware Thefts

Gamescom organizers have issued a formal apology after facing criticism for their initial response to hardware thefts affecting indie developers at last week's event in Cologne.

Organizers behind Gamescom have officially apologized for how they initially handled communication regarding hardware thefts that targeted multiple independent developers during last week's convention in Cologne, Germany. Exhibitors reported numerous laptops and pieces of equipment stolen from their booths. Among those affected was indie developer Ryan Laley, who noted that the loss effectively ended his show early, alongside Iam8bit—which had two laptops taken overnight from the same business area—and Tessera Studios.

Initial responses from Gamescom management stated only that they were aware of stolen hardware and understood exhibitor frustration. That early statement drew widespread condemnation from attendees and the wider industry. In response to the backlash, Gamescom organizers published a follow-up statement on September 4, admitting that their first reaction failed to strike the right tone or show adequate empathy to those affected.

Organizers acknowledged that a theft of this nature represents far more than a simple material loss for smaller studios, potentially ruining an entire event and destroying months or years of accumulated work. Management confirmed they have already begun direct conversations with affected individuals to listen and discuss the consequences of the incidents. Additionally, the response from the broader community drew praise, with industry members offering unconditional help. Companies including Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red and Indie Game Joe stepped forward to support impacted studios.

Despite community support, Gamescom emphasized that the responsibility to maintain a safe environment remains with the event organizers. As part of a renewed commitment to security, management announced plans to carry out a dedicated review alongside their regular post-event evaluations. In the coming weeks, organizers intend to host a roundtable with representatives from shared indie booths to develop concrete safety measures together. Exhibitors who experienced thefts are urged to report incidents to both event organizers at [email protected] and local law enforcement to ensure thorough documentation and investigation.
