Game Informer Announces Exodus Cover Story Following Hands-On Developer Visit

Game Informer has revealed its upcoming cover story centered on Exodus, the ambitious sci-fi role-playing game developed by Archetype Interactive. Initially introduced to many players when actor Matthew McConaughey took the stage at The Game Awards in 2023, the project has since emerged as a major focus for the publication. Video editor Eric Van Allen and another editor traveled to Austin, Texas, to visit the studio and spend roughly four hours playing the upcoming sci-fi adventure.

Set 40,000 years in the future after humanity left Earth behind, Exodus explores a universe where near-lightspeed travel forces humans to experience time dilation. This phenomenon means that transit times feel like mere seconds to travelers while weeks, months, or years pass in the outside world, directly influencing how player decisions impact the future decades later. During their hands-on session, the editors explored an early mission set in the Traveler Launch Center featuring Salt the Awakened—a sentient octopus who pilots a mech and serves as the cover star for the September/October issue—as well as Persepolis, the game's hub city, and a mission on the space station Khonsu.

Subscribers will gain access to a 14-page cover story detailing the game, alongside follow-up web and video coverage including a rapid-fire interview. Additionally, editor-in-chief Matt Miller spoke with author Peter F. Hamilton and Archetype developers regarding non-video game projects tied to the franchise, such as novels, a tabletop role-playing game, and an episode of Secret Level.

Alongside the Exodus feature, the upcoming issue celebrates Game Informer's 35th anniversary with a 12-page retrospective spread and an exclusive physical poster shipped to subscribers. The publication also announced that physical subscriptions are expanding to 40 new countries, allowing international readers to receive the new issue as their introduction to the expanded print rollout.
