Free-to-play gacha games are powering unprecedented growth on PC, according to a new report from Newzoo. Between 2021 and 2025, playtime for gacha titles surged by more than 92%, equivalent to almost one billion additional hours played.

The expansion reflects a fundamental shift in the market's scale. In 2021, Newzoo tracked only three major gacha games across PC and console platforms. By 2025, that number had grown to seventeen, showing how rapidly the category has matured and captured developer attention.

Gacha RPGs have become the primary driver of free-to-play growth in the PC market, outpacing console-based gaming significantly. Console growth exists but remains far weaker than its PC counterpart.

The category's success reflects evolving player preferences. Rather than emphasizing competitive gameplay requiring thousands of hours to master, newer gacha games increasingly center on character and weapon progression systems. Monetization ties directly to advancement through drip-fed rewards, creating a monetization model distinct from traditional cosmetic-focused free-to-play titles.

Newzoo's report noted that gacha games are "capturing a growing share of player attention" as the category matures. The proliferation of major releases across PC and console demonstrates sustained industry investment in the format.

The gacha concept remains polarizing among players, though its commercial success is undeniable. Japan remains a cultural epicenter for gacha gaming, with dedicated venues around Tokyo showcasing how deeply the monetization model resonates with certain audiences.
