Gabe Newell Defends Steam Against Monopoly Accusations in Legal Testimony Transcript
A recently obtained transcript reveals Valve head Gabe Newell testified that Steam faces heavy competition and customers have extensive purchasing choices.

A transcript of testimony from Valve head Gabe Newell has emerged from a 2023 legal case involving Wolfire Games. Wolfire Games previously accused Valve of monopolizing the personal computer store market. Bloomberg recently obtained and reported on the trial transcript, detailing Newell's defense of Steam's business practices and market standing.
During the trial, Newell stated that Steam surpassed competitors through store development and constant innovation. He emphasized that gamers are not restricted and can purchase games in other stores or directly from developers if they choose. Newell also denied the existence of an unwritten rule prohibiting developers from selling their games at a lower price outside of Steam. “Valve does not have a policy or practice of dictating prices to third-party software developers on other platforms,” stated Newell.
When shown correspondence between developers and the Steam team that purportedly confirmed the existence of this pricing rule, Newell disagreed with the accusation. When asked how Valve would react to a studio lowering game prices in another store, he stated he did not understand the question. Newell added that many developers and gamers are satisfied with Steam services.
Separately, the Bloomberg report described operations at Valve, noting that Newell rarely intervenes in business processes and top managers once vetoed a proposal to reduce commission fees for games earning under one million dollars over long-term revenue concerns.
