New Free Blender Add-on Simplifies Stylized Hair Rigging

A new free tool for Blender automatically generates bone chains for stylized 3D hair strands to eliminate manual placement during character rigging.

A new free tool available on the Blender Extensions platform aims to simplify the rigging process for 3D character artists. The utility automatically creates deform bone chains along stylized hair strands, saving creators from the tedious task of placing hair bones manually.

The generator can automatically build bone chains from a selected hair tip, giving users the option to make the bones follow the contour of the hair strand or form a straight line. Artists can also manually define hair tip and hair root markers to gain more control over the output. Additional adjustable parameters include the total number of bones, the coverage length along the hair, root depth, and direction.

According to the details, the generator supports open hair cards, closed or tubular hair geometries, and multiple selected hair strands simultaneously. Operating entirely inside Blender, the tool works locally without requiring external dependencies or network access. To use the generator, creators need Blender 4.5 LTS or a newer version.

Other free utilities mentioned for 3D workflows include Draw-Hair for drawing hair curves directly in the viewport alongside a guide mesh, ShellFit for addressing body and clothing clipping issues, and Proximity Snap for general modeling tasks.
