Fortnite Sidekick NPCs Going Invisible on Creator Islands
Epic Games is investigating a bug that makes NPC Sidekicks invisible on developer-made Fortnite islands, disrupting creature battles, farming games, and companion adventures that depend on these characters.
Epic Games is investigating a Fortnite bug affecting Sidekick NPCs on creator-made islands. The problem emerged following reports on October 1, when developers discovered that NPC Sidekicks were failing to appear visually, despite their associated devices and collision effects remaining functional.
Developer vageuly reported testing multiple islands on PC and Nintendo Switch 2, observing that Sidekick models did not render while their underlying systems persisted. Giddybrom confirmed that NPCs retained collision and despawn effects despite near-total invisibility. VarunAiyar also documented that Sidekicks failed to appear during UEFN live sessions, where creators preview their projects.
On October 1, Epic Games acknowledged the issue in its v42.30 known-issues thread, stating: "We're investigating an issue where NPC Sidekicks are invisible on developer-made islands." Epic staff member Flak responded to community reports and confirmed the investigation was underway.
Sidekick NPCs became available to creators in June 2026, with islands using the feature opening to publication on July 23. Epic specifically designed the feature to support monster battlers, creature-collection RPGs, farming games and companion-based adventures. Creators use Verse code and the Sidekick creation documentation to define character behavior, appearance and size, then connect these definitions to NPC Spawners within their islands.
For games built around finding, following or battling creatures, losing visual access to these characters disrupts core gameplay. Players may struggle to identify interaction targets or understand what an activity requires. The visibility problem appears to affect multiple islands and platforms, though the extent of the disruption varies across reported cases.
The reported issue specifically targets NPC Sidekicks on developer islands rather than player-owned Sidekick cosmetics in Battle Royale. Players familiar with companions like the Kitsune Sidekick should not experience missing Locker items. Epic's Cosmetic Sync feature allows NPCs to adopt the appearance of equipped player Sidekicks, but a visibility problem with island NPCs does not confirm loss of cosmetic ownership.
As of October 1, Epic has not provided a confirmed cause, repair timeline or official workaround. The investigation remains ongoing. Creators experiencing the issue can improve their reports by including island codes, platform information and footage demonstrating the expected behavior.
