Former Rockstar Developer Reveals Early Internal Fears That GTA Online Would Fail
In a recent interview, former Rockstar Games designer Matt Freedman discussed early anxieties surrounding GTA Online, noting that developers feared the project would flop due to a lack of content depth and technical instability.
When Rockstar Games originally released Grand Theft Auto Online in 2013 as a multiplayer platform utilizing Grand Theft Auto 5 as its base, the reception was far from smooth. According to a recent interview with former Rockstar designer Matt Freedman on Eldorado.gg, the early days of development were mired by intense anxiety among the staff, with many fearing the project was destined to fail entirely.
Freedman, whose credits at the studio include Red Dead Redemption 2, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Max Payne 3, explained that while Grand Theft Auto 5 went on to achieve massive commercial heights far exceeding expectations, the team initially viewed the online component with deep skepticism. During development, success was treated as an afterthought as the team scrambled simply to shape the mode up and get it out the door. The resulting product suffered from network instability, bugs, and a severe lack of content depth that alarmed internal testers.
Freedman recalled warnings from quality assurance testers who estimated that completing every available activity in the online mode took roughly four hours. Confronted with such a brief initial offering, staff members worried about the mode's replayability and longevity. Freedman noted that team members openly voiced panic over the short runtime, believing the studio was facing major trouble before the mode ultimately evolved into a massive industry phenomenon.
Looking toward the future, Freedman also touched upon the upcoming development landscape for multiplayer platforms, noting that any online component for Grand Theft Auto 6 would have begun development during the peak of the games-as-a-service model while concluding as that particular market trend faces mounting challenges.
