Former PlayStation Studios President Shuhei Yoshida Praises Xbox Disc-to-Digital Program

Former PlayStation Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has shared public praise for Microsoft's recently announced disc-to-digital program. Yoshida took to social media platform X to describe the initiative as a "great move by team Xbox," offering the remark without additional commentary. The endorsement is notable given Yoshida's extensive history with Sony, having spent over three decades at the company, including serving as president of SIE Worldwide Studios—now known as PlayStation Studios—from 2008 to 2019 before transitioning to head PlayStation Indies and retiring in 2024.

The announcement arrives as major console manufacturers navigate the industry's shift toward a digital-only future. Sony has announced plans to halt PlayStation disc production for new titles starting in January 2028, though the company has not yet detailed a method for physical game owners to continue using existing discs on potential future hardware like the PlayStation 6.

By contrast, Microsoft's disc-to-digital approach allows players to insert an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S disc to receive a digital license for the game. This license permits playing across compatible platforms, including Xbox, PC, and Xbox Cloud Streaming, without needing the physical disc inserted afterward. However, the system includes caveats: if a user lends or sells the physical disc, the digital license is revoked from their profile and transferred to the new user who inserts the disc.

Yoshida's remarks highlight differing strategies between major competitors as physical media support evolves. Since retiring from Sony, where he spent his final years supporting indie developers, Yoshida has continued working in the industry as a consultant and speaker.
