Former PlayStation Boss Says Disc-Free Future Is Depressing

Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden recently shared his thoughts on the shift toward an all-digital gaming industry, calling the potential end of physical discs 'depressing, but solvable' if Sony permits third-party manufacturing.

Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden has spoken out about the shifting landscape of physical media in the gaming industry, describing a disc-free future as 'depressing, but solvable.' In an interview with the Game (by Pad and Pixel) Substack, the former chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios discussed how the industry might sustain physical game discs as companies increasingly move toward digital distribution.

Sony previously confirmed plans to stop producing physical PlayStation discs starting in 2028. According to Layden, keeping physical media alive remains possible if major platform holders are willing to adapt. He suggested that Sony could license the disc-making process to third parties, noting that without partnering with bespoke disc manufacturers, maintaining physical media formats will not happen.

The discussion surrounding physical versus digital ownership continues to draw heavy industry focus. Sony has maintained its stance on digital ecosystems, emphasizing that digital licenses are not permanently owned by consumers. Meanwhile, conversations regarding the preservation of physical games post-2028 remain a prominent topic among players and industry veterans alike as hardware manufacturers continue to evolve their distribution strategies.
