Forest of Deceit, the social deduction party game created by Ghost Camp and Thomas Mackinnon, has received a significant update adding support for six new languages. The game is now available in German, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, and Italian alongside English.
The update addresses one of the most common requests from players since Forest of Deceit's release earlier this year. For a game built entirely around conversation and language, localization was a priority for the developers. In a social deduction game where the goal is to identify traitors among a group of four to eight players, misunderstanding game mechanics or losing clarity on your position can lead to appearing suspicious unintentionally.
Ghost Camp and Thomas Mackinnon worked closely with translators to ensure accuracy across all languages. The developers emphasized the importance of distinguishing between game mechanics, such as the difference between getting lost in the woods randomly versus being forcibly ousted by other players.
One key feature of the localization update is granular customization. Players can set different languages for different elements of the game. For example, in a mixed-language group where one player speaks only Italian, that player's mobile controller can be set to Italian while the main game remains in English. This approach makes the game accessible to entire groups rather than just individual language speakers.
Forest of Deceit is a party game where players gather resources to build a shelter against an approaching storm. Innocents attempt to collect useful resources while Traitors sabotage efforts with bad resources and try to get other players lost. After each day of gathering, players discuss what happened and eventually vote to expel suspected Traitors. Innocents win by building the shelter in time; Traitors win if they prevent completion.
The game supports both local and online multiplayer. Online play works through screen sharing, with players using their mobile web browsers to control the game. Forest of Deceit is narrated by Sylvester McCoy, known for his roles in "Doctor Who" and "The Hobbit."
The localization update is now available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC. The game supports Xbox Play Anywhere. Forest of Deceit costs $9.99.
