First-Time VR Developer Builds and Submits Meta Quest App Using AI Coding Tools
A writer with no prior coding experience used AI tools and Unity to build Punchable Face, a VR app, and submit it to the Meta Quest Store within days.

A writer with no prior coding background and minimal Unity experience successfully built a virtual reality app named Punchable Face and submitted it to the Meta Quest Store. The developer utilized an M2 MacBook Air, a Meta Quest 3, and Unity 6.3 LTS alongside AI coding tools to complete the project over a span of several days. Development began on Saturday, September 5, and reached a submittable state by Tuesday night, September 8. Most of the work occurred in evening blocks alongside normal daily routines during Labor Day weekend.
The project relied heavily on ChatGPT and Codex to handle code generation and project modifications. Day-to-day work utilized GPT-5.6 Sol at Medium reasoning, while harder problems, such as a persistent XR positioning issue, required switching to GPT-6 Astra Medium. Character development also incorporated Meshy for generating 3D mockups of the characters, known as the Barker and the Flexer. The developer directed the creation by describing desired features, running builds, testing inside the headset, and providing iterative feedback.
Punchable Face features a simple premise where players stand in front of an obnoxious carnival barker and land punches. Punches are scored from 100 to 999 based on velocity, and the character reacts with visual changes, including a face that grows redder with repeated hits. The development loop centered on prompting Codex, waiting for changes, building the project, and testing the results inside a headset. While the AI managed the technical implementation, human judgment remained necessary to refine interactions, adjust character heights, and fix spatial placement issues.
Submitting the application required navigating the Meta Quest Store release process, which involved creating store listings alongside technical development. The experiment demonstrated how accessible AI coding tools allow individuals with zero programming experience to conceptualize, build, test, and submit a functional VR application to a major storefront.
