Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series composer warns that AI-generated album released under her name is not her work

Kumi Tanioka, best known for her work composing the soundtrack to Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, has warned fans about an unverified album recently attributed to her on major streaming services like Spotify. Tanioka took to social media to express her confusion regarding the release, titled A Village Built on Wind, stating firmly that she had nothing to do with its creation. Her legitimate music is also found across titles like Final Fantasy 11, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.

Despite Tanioka being a verified artist on Spotify—a status meant to indicate an authentic creator—the new EP surfaced directly on her official profile alongside her actual works. In her public post, Tanioka questioned whether the release was the result of generative artificial intelligence or simply an accidental mix-up involving an individual sharing the same name. She explicitly clarified for listeners that the album was not made by her and suggested they enjoy it as the work of someone else.

Digital Sonic Design, a company that has published some of the composer's music, issued a statement addressing the incident. The publisher noted that while the tracks do not infringe upon Tanioka's existing copyrights, the false attribution carries a strong potential to confuse the public. Additionally, the company highlighted that on YouTube Music, the tracks in question have explicitly been labeled as AI-generated.

The publisher described the situation as an exploitation of systemic vulnerabilities present across digital streaming platforms. Pointing out that past instances have involved unofficial or unreleased tracks being recreated through ear-copying and distribution, Digital Sonic Design stated that the incident prompts them to consider potential responses to protect artists from similar misattributions.
