The reception to Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail's story has been a journey as eventful as the expansion itself. As the first expansion built to establish a brand-new arc following a decade of storytelling, its initial narrative reception faced criticism. However, criticism regarding the core narrative has largely abated over recent updates leading toward the next expansion, Evercold, scheduled for January.

With the release of Patch 7.56, Dawntrail's final batch of quests serves as a direct prologue to Evercold rather than operating as a light teaser. Instead of spending time dropping hints and introducing minor characters at the very end, the patch drops players straight into the ice-clad Fourth—the reflection serving as the setting for the upcoming expansion—and into encounters with future foes.

The update introduces Visna, a character equipped with a crossbow who demonstrates moves utilizing a falcon. This offers a look at a physical ranged job, though developer Creative Studio 3 has kept details close to its chest. Visna's dialogue introduces players to the lore of the Fourth, detailing how differently-branded residents are confined to gigantic airships because the surface has been completely frozen over for 500 years.

The sequence builds toward preparing players to head to Evercold's first location, Naglfar, while confining players to a separate area to preview the atmosphere. The storyline concludes just before characters set off toward Naglfar, positioning Evercold to dive straight into the action upon release. This approach by Creative Studio 3 provides a new-expansion preamble within the concluding moments of the previous expansion, leaving a four-month wait ahead of the launch of Evercold.
