Final Fantasy 14 delays Crucible roguelike rankings over unfair scoring system

Square Enix has postponed the first season of rankings for the Crucible of the Unbroken after discovering that the scoring system was rewarding players for avoiding the mode's most engaging mechanics.

Square Enix has postponed the start of Crucible Rankings for Final Fantasy 14's new Crucible of the Unbroken roguelike mode, citing fairness concerns tied to its scoring system.

The Crucible of the Unbroken launched alongside the new Beastmaster job. To compete on the leaderboards, players must clear the "third degree" difficulty tier, which unlocks rankings eligibility. Top finishers earn a Tourmaline Golem Mount, creating both competitive incentive and time-limited appeal.

The problem lies in how points are awarded. While some bonuses reward skill-based achievements like avoiding failed mechanics or taking reduced damage, others actively discourage engaging with the mode's core systems. Players earn more points by using only three of the permitted 15 familiars, avoiding campsites entirely, refusing to feed or gear their roster, and sticking to a single familiar type across all fights.

This creates a fundamental design conflict. To compete for high leaderboard positions and the associated mount reward, players must essentially abandon the systems that make the roguelike mode interesting: tailoring team compositions to specific encounters. The scenario parallels a hypothetical World of Warcraft system that awarded more Mythic+ points for not using talent trees.

In response to these mechanics, players have begun attempting workarounds and exploits. Square Enix acknowledged this in an official statement: "Since the release of beastmaster, we've seen many players enjoying the new limited job and tackling its challenges. That said, we have also received considerable feedback on Beastmaster's combat balance, as well as reports of issues with certain gameplay mechanics, which we are working to address. If rankings were to begin under these conditions, it would be difficult to determine whether the results reflect the intended balance of the job and its mechanics, impacting the fairness of the ranking process."

The postponement allows the development team to address both balance concerns with the Beastmaster job and the underlying scoring incentive structure. The company has not announced a revised timeline for when Crucible Rankings will begin.
