As graphics cards continue to rise in price, hardware security and warranty protection become vital concerns for players. This is particularly true for high-end hardware such as the RTX 5090, which can cost upwards of 5,000 dollars. However, online reports indicate that the physical design choices of Nvidia graphics cards might disrupt the return merchandise authorization process.

According to a post by Redditor Willing-Avocado-4830, a user struggled with Nvidia regarding an RTX 5090 Founders Edition RMA because the physical serial number became unreadable. The user claimed the RMA request was rejected. While individual experiences can vary, other users in online discussion threads have confirmed that serial numbers on their own Founders Edition cards are also fading. The issue is not limited to a single model.

PC Gamer staff also observed fading on their own RTX 5080 Founders Edition card. Traditional serial numbers are usually placed on stickers, but some newer RTX Founders Edition cards feature numbers printed directly onto the bottom jut of the PCIe bracket. This location sits on the metal part of the I/O side that slots down between the computer case and the motherboard, and the printed text appears prone to fading over time.

This fading creates difficulties because Nvidia needs to verify product authenticity and check warranty eligibility. Nvidia warranty guidelines specify that coverage applies only to original retail purchases and does not extend to used products. Although publicly available information from Nvidia does not explicitly detail whether a physical serial number is mandatory for returns, and consumer laws vary by region, a missing serial number presents clear verification hurdles.

Experts suggest that owners with a still-legible serial number should take a photograph of the card as a precaution. It remains uncertain whether a photo would satisfy warranty requirements if the physical text wears off entirely before the card reaches a support center.
