Epic Games has officially released a preview version of Unreal Engine 5.8. This early build allows developers to test out new tools and features in advance of the full software launch.

Among the additions is an experimental feature called Mesh Terrain, which is a new system designed to create large scale landscapes based on a 3D mesh. It works natively alongside the Procedural Content Generation framework. The Procedural Content Generation system itself received significant enhancements, letting developers manually edit generated content without losing their procedural logic.

Epic Games also improved the experimental Procedural Vegetation Editor plugin, making it easier to create and edit flora directly inside the engine without external programs. Another experimental plugin, MetaHuman Crowd, enables real time population of game worlds with crowds ranging from dozens to several thousand characters. Additionally, the MegaLights technology for realistic dynamic lighting has moved from the experimental stage to production readiness, while Control Rig Physics has entered the beta testing stage.

The full release date for Unreal Engine 5.8 remains officially unannounced. However, rumors suggest the engine could see a full release as soon as next month, potentially coinciding with Unreal Fest Chicago 2026, which is scheduled for June 16 through June 18.
