Irish Startup Entity Raises $5.8M to Launch Browser-Based Gaming Platform
Dublin-based startup Entity has secured €5 million in seed funding to develop a web platform for console-quality gaming, scheduled for launch in 2027.
Irish gaming distribution startup Entity has secured $5.8 million (€5 million) in a seed funding round. Headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, the company intends to use the capital injection to accelerate the development of its upcoming web-based gaming platform, which is scheduled to launch in early 2027.
Entity aims to position the modern web browser as a viable alternative to traditional hardware like dedicated consoles and PCs. By leveraging modern web standards, including WebGPU and WebAssembly, the platform aims to deliver a true "click and play" experience. According to the company, this setup will allow users to access console-quality games and multiplayer lobbies in seconds via a single web link, completely bypassing the need for downloads or installs.
The funding round received backing from venture capital firms ACT, Delta Partners, and Elkstone, with additional support provided by Enterprise Ireland and several games industry angel investors. The capital will support the lead-up to the 2027 launch, which is planned to feature a diverse catalog ranging from PC and console best sellers to new original intellectual properties.
Founded in 2024, Entity is led by a team of industry veterans. The company’s co-founders include Rich Barnwell (CEO), Kev Bergin (CTO), Dave McGovern (COO), Fergus Duggan (Creative Director), and Artur Stawiarski. This leadership group previously drove Digit, the developer behind Star Trek Fleet Command that was acquired by Scopely in 2019. The executive team is joined by Head of Games Paul Farley, who was previously involved with Firestoke, Tag Games, and ChiliConnect.
According to CEO Rich Barnwell, the initiative is designed to address a shifting landscape in how games are created and discovered. "The way games are made, discovered, and played in the 'new web' era is fundamentally changing and these games will need a new home," Barnwell said in a statement, noting that the industry has long been constrained by "friction-heavy downloads and arbitrary constraints."
