Endless Legend 2 is leaving early access on September 22, bringing Amplitude Studios' elaborate 4X strategy to full release. The game builds on the studio's reputation for designing asymmetrical factions that play as genuinely different experiences rather than cosmetic variations.
The core roster contains six factions, each with fundamentally distinct mechanics and playstyles. The Kin of Sheredyn function as defensive fortification specialists, gaining economic bonuses and magical powers as their walls grow stronger. In contrast, the Sandshapers are unrelenting expansionists driven by sand, forcing them to terraform Saiadha's damp world into deserts they can consume. This transforms how players approach city building, resource management, and military strategy.
Amplitude has introduced rogue faction variants to expand strategic depth without increasing the base roster. The Order of Zelevas shares the Kin's militant focus but plays entirely differently, prioritizing territory expansion over capital fortification. The Order purchases soldiers instantly using dust, Endless Legend 2's main currency, making economic dominance essential alongside military strength. This creates distinct city development and diplomatic strategies compared to the Kin.
Beyond faction choice, the game's new city-building mechanics allow players to construct settlements and connect them into megacities spanning multiple provinces. Tidefalls, where the ocean retreats to reveal new realms, maintain exploration potential throughout the campaign. Story-driven campaigns layer personal faction quests atop an overarching narrative, creating persistent long-term objectives.
Amplitude's approach to faction design separates it from contemporaries in the 4X genre. Rather than unique units or buildings, the differences are fundamental. Research choices, unit upgrades, city development, diplomacy decisions, and minor faction assimilation all feed into making each faction uniquely personalized. This design philosophy has influenced other studios, though results have varied.
Endless Legend 2 is available now on Steam and leaves early access September 22.
