Kurt Kuhlmann, a former Elder Scrolls designer, has offered insight into Bethesda's approach to the franchise in the years following Fallout: New Vegas. According to Kuhlmann, studio leadership under Todd Howard has been cautious about approving major Elder Scrolls projects developed by external studios.

"I don't know that Todd wanted to create that situation again for The Elder Scrolls," Kuhlmann said, referencing how New Vegas, developed by Obsidian Entertainment, became a fan favorite despite being a spinoff rather than a mainline entry.

Kuhlmann's comments suggest the studio's protectiveness stems from concern about external developers potentially overshadowing internal work. He noted that considerations around Elder Scrolls Online informed this thinking, indicating multiple factors shaped Bethesda's strategy rather than a single decision.

The designer emphasized that this caution should not be interpreted as insecurity. In his view, senior Bethesda developers respect Obsidian's work and speak positively of New Vegas. Tensions arise primarily when online communities impugn the studio's character or call for staff changes over perceived missteps with the franchise.

Kuhlmann's assessment reflects broader industry dynamics: while Fallout fans have seen their calls answered with Obsidian working on a new Fallout title, the project faces uncertainty amid ongoing Xbox layoffs and studio closures.
