Dungeons of Eternity is getting a shake-up with the Tomb Extraction update, a free addition that introduces the game's fourth dungeon type. Released September 21, 2026, the mode arrives as the three-year-old roguelite looks to refresh its core loop after years of iterative updates.
The core difference in Tomb Extraction is the naked run format. Players enter dungeons stripped of their usual inventory and weapon slots, forced to choose from five available weapons scattered throughout the tomb. This constraint creates a strategic challenge absent from the game's three existing dungeon types: Soul Harvest, Crystal Hunt, and Dungeon Raids.
The five weapons are the Crypt Keeper's Staff, which shoots illuminating orbs that can be detonated for area damage, the Tomb Breaker Hammer for smashing sealed tombs and armored enemies, the Gravelight Bow for illumination and impact explosions, the Necromancer Staff for charming enemies into temporary allies, and Skull Daggers for general combat. This limited arsenal shifts the feel of combat compared to the loadout-based approach of other dungeons, though the breezy combat and sound design remain satisfying through repeated runs.
Procedural generation plays a role through a rune system. Players unlock runes by completing Dungeon Raids and collecting runic blocks, then insert these runes into the tomb generator to determine layout, loot, and difficulty. Gems purchased in the outpost activate individual extraction runs. This progression loop ties Tomb Extraction directly to existing content, encouraging players to revisit Dungeon Raids.
The update introduces thirty new rings, each with unique perks. These rings occupy two new hand slots and can only be acquired in Tomb Extraction, offering long-term incentive for players who have unlocked most rewards elsewhere. Extraction chests also appear to offer higher gold rewards than those in other dungeon types.
Solo play introduces trade-offs. Taking the bow or staff for illumination is nearly mandatory to avoid navigating pitch-black dungeons. Choosing illumination means sacrificing the hammer needed to open sealed tombs for their contents. Tomb Extraction plays more comfortably in groups, where players can distribute the five weapons across the party to access all options simultaneously.
Enemy variety in the new mode remains basic, relying primarily on skeletons and the Crypt Guard, a new enemy type easily handled with daggers or the hammer. After several runs, the combat can feel repetitive despite the change in loadout structure.
Developer Othergate designed Tomb Extraction as a change of pace for a game that has historically relied on three core dungeon objectives for three years. New room designs in past updates addressed pacing, but the fundamental mechanics remained constant. The naked run format, rune generation, and lighting requirements introduce enough variation to warrant a return for players who have stepped away.
