Dune Awakening adds solo mode and removes penalties in massive update

Update 1.5 overhauls Dune Awakening with a full single-player mode, optional PvE multiplayer, and softer progression mechanics that let players keep their bases and vehicles instead of losing them to harsh penalties.

Dune Awakening's MMO elements have been a persistent sticking point for players who loved its survival crafting but wanted to avoid multiplayer conflict. Funcom has now addressed this with Update 1.5, which adds a proper single-player mode and makes the entire game significantly less punishing.

The solo mode reworks several core systems to function independently. The Exchange marketplace becomes an NPC-driven shop rather than a player-driven market. The Landsraad political system, which normally relies on guild participation, now simulates rival factions automatically so progression continues without other players. Coriolis storms in the Deep Desert have been softened to allow solo players to maintain progress, though Funcom cautions they remain "very dangerous."

Update 1.5 introduces three preset difficulty levels for single-player and self-hosted servers, plus a fourth customizable mode where players can adjust sandstorm frequency, security zones, item durability, base decay rates, and XP multipliers.

Multiplayer has also shifted toward less confrontational play. PvE multiplayer is now entirely optional, with the Deep Desert's PvP no longer mandatory. The starting zone of Hagga Basin is now exclusively PvE by default, though server hosts can change it to full PvP if desired.

The game itself is considerably more forgiving. A new snapshot system lets players reconstruct destroyed bases using saved blueprints. Destroyed vehicles can be recovered for up to 30 days. Base upkeep taxation has been removed entirely. The durability penalty for dying has dropped from 5 percent to 2 percent. Funcom summarizes the changes as "You don't have to lose things anymore."

This shift reflects a broader industry trend away from punitive mechanics. Bungie recently added a permanent PvE mode to Marathon after its extraction shooter struggled with player retention. The Blood of Dawnwalker's developer has indicated the sequel may drop its controversial time-limit system.

Dune Awakening is currently half-price until October 1.
