Dragon Quest Series Crosses 100 Million Total Shipments and Digital Sales

Total shipments and digital sales for the Dragon Quest series have officially surpassed 100 million units. Square Enix announced the milestone, which was also shared by series creator Yuji Horii on Twitter/X alongside a short video thanking fans and staff for their support.

Horii noted that when the very first game was in development forty years ago, reaching this point was beyond his imagination. The franchise launched in Japan in 1986, establishing itself as a pioneer in the JRPG genre before growing into a global phenomenon that spans 11 main series entries, various spin-offs, remakes, and other media.

Recent releases and upcoming titles have helped push the franchise toward this milestone. Remakes over the past few years include Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, and Dragon Quest VII Reimagined. Meanwhile, the most recent main entry, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, originally released in 2017, and Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World has an upcoming launch. Development on Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams was restarted from scratch, as announced previously by Horii and executive producer Yosuke Saito.
