Double Fine Productions Announces Thank You Bus Driver, a Chaotic Bus Driving Game for PC

Double Fine Productions has announced Thank You Bus Driver, a chaotic bus driving game coming to PC. The title represents the studio's first major announcement since splitting from Xbox Game Studios earlier this year.

In Thank You Bus Driver, players assume the role of a city bus driver navigating their daily route while maintaining order among passengers. The core gameplay loop involves driving passengers to their destinations within time limits while enforcing an ever-changing set of rules. These rules include prohibitions on sleeping, toenail clipping, and unpleasant odors. When passengers break the rules, the driver must slap them into compliance.

The game creates tension through its central mechanic: players must monitor passengers via a rearview mirror and turn around to administer discipline, which risks crashing into oncoming traffic. New rules can be added randomly throughout gameplay, requiring constant vigilance. Performance is rewarded—better conduct translates to more gratitude from passengers, which extends time budgets for reaching subsequent stops. Additionally, players can collect dashboard decorations and unlock town variants.

Thank You Bus Driver will launch on PC through multiple storefronts including Steam, GOG, Humble Store, and itch.io. The game currently has no confirmed release date, though it is available to wishlist on Steam.

The announcement comes as Double Fine adjusts to its newly independent status. Studio head Tim Schafer recently discussed the studio's separation from Xbox in an interview with Bloomberg, expressing confidence in the company's future prospects.
