Dokimon Quest Claimed Over 1 Million Times During Free Steam Giveaway

Solo developer Yanako RPGs offered the classic GBC-era monster-collecting RPG Dokimon Quest for free on Steam, generating massive player interest alongside a sequel announcement.

The retro monster-collecting RPG Dokimon Quest has experienced a massive surge in popularity on Steam. Developer Yanako RPGs recently made the game completely free to keep for a limited two-day window, resulting in over one million claims by players looking to experience its pixel-art style, Game Boy Color nostalgia, and design influences inspired by Evangelion.

This promotional giveaway easily shattered the turn-based RPG's lifetime concurrent Steam player peak with a full day still remaining in the offer. The promotion coincided with the reveal of its upcoming sequel, Dokimon Quest 2, which now has an active Steam page. The upcoming sequel will transport the monster-taming experience to Edo-period Japan and introduce features such as mount systems, dungeons, faster battles, furniture crafting, and customizable housing.

The original Dokimon Quest also received a substantial update to mark the occasion. The game's mostly solo developer implemented a local multiplayer workaround, allowing PC players to trade creatures and battle other players' teams by generating codes. The developer noted in a blog post that this code system was selected because more advanced online functionality would require substantial time and funding. This specific feature will remain exclusive to the PC version and will not be coming to console ports.

In addition to the code-based multiplayer feature, the new update adds a tutorial fairy to clarify some of the game's more obtuse mechanics, introduces new battle background art for specific biomes, and features a completely remade quest log.
