Dodo Duckie Review: A Seamless Blend of 2D and 3D Puzzle-Platforming
A review of Dodo Duckie explores its unique perspective-shifting mechanic between 2D and 3D spaces on PC and Xbox Series X.
Dodo Duckie presents a unique approach to the puzzle-platformer genre by allowing players to seamlessly swap between a flat 2D surface and a full 3D world with the click of a button. Rather than opting for a traditional 2.5D style, the game lets players view the environment from either perspective at any given time, instantly rearranging the surroundings when shifting back and forth after moving blocks and solving puzzles.
This innovative gameplay mechanic introduces a surprising level of challenge. Player positioning matters significantly when changing dimensions; objects placed in the 3D world will continue to block paths in 2D even if they are no longer visible. Furthermore, running and jumping in a straight line in 2D requires precision, as slight off-center alignment in the 3D world can cause the player character to crash directly into a wall. Gameplay mechanics also differ by perspective, as players can jump in 2D and break items in 3D, though they cannot jump in 3D or break items in 2D.
Despite moments of frustration, the title balances its charming and adorable presentation—featuring a duck protagonist, collectible coins used to buy cute hats, and sleeping capybaras that can be gently nudged aside—with robust and demanding gameplay. Developed by Solo Game, who provided a PC review code, the ambitious title successfully delivers an enjoyable and engaging experience that stands out for platforming fans regardless of their preferred dimension.
