Discord Relaunches Age Verification With Privacy-First Options

Discord has re-launched its age verification process for all users, introducing multiple verification methods designed to protect privacy. Users can now verify their age using credit cards, the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Google Wallet, or AgeKey, which Discord says does not share personal or private data.

The platform originally announced age verification would become mandatory for all users in March, but postponed the rollout to the second half of 2026 following privacy concerns. Discord co-founder and CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy said the delay reflected the company's commitment to getting the approach right.

"By launching a global approach with non-biometric options, we're getting ahead of laws that might ask us to implement something less privacy-focused," Vishnevskiy said. "The decisions policymakers make now will shape how platforms advance both teen safety and privacy for years to come."

Discord's system automatically assigns users to one of three age groups: Adult (18+), Teen (13 to 17), or Unconfirmed. The verification process bases assignments on account age or associated servers and does not review messages, calls, or other content. Users who don't verify can continue using Discord with limitations while the platform determines their age group.

The company has committed to transparency by publicly documenting all third-party age assurance vendors, publishing its age group estimation methodology, and releasing age assurance data through its transparency reports. Vishnevskiy emphasised that Discord will be judged on the accuracy of age estimation, how quickly it corrects errors, and its continued commitment to publishing data publicly.
