Discord Testing Game Mode to Reduce CPU and GPU Usage While Gaming

Discord is testing a new feature that automatically lowers the app's CPU and GPU consumption when a game is detected running on your PC, scaling back animations and disabling effects to free up system resources.

Discord is testing a new "Game Mode" feature designed to reduce the app's impact on PC performance during gaming sessions. According to reports from multiple sources, the feature automatically lowers Discord's CPU and GPU usage whenever the app detects a game running.

The feature was first reported by Discord Previews, an X account that tracks experimental Discord features. When enabled, Game Mode causes Discord's client to automatically reduce animations and disable certain effects, freeing up system resources for games.

Discord already offers a Reduced Motion setting that produces similar effects, but Game Mode would trigger these changes automatically only when a game is detected, then revert to normal visuals once the game closes. This differs from the manual Reduced Motion toggle found in Discord's settings.

Users with older PCs or gaming laptops may see the most noticeable improvements to frame rates, particularly when running multiple applications. Competitive gamers playing titles like Counter-Strike, Dota, or Marvel Rivals where frame consistency matters could benefit from enabling the feature.

However, several uncertainties remain. Discord has not officially announced Game Mode, so no release date exists. The specific effects that will be disabled and the magnitude of performance gains are unclear. Additionally, a common Discord complaint involves excessive RAM consumption, and there is no indication that Game Mode will address memory usage.
