Multi-Month Delay for Original Deus Ex Allowed Developers to Expand Gunther Hermann's Role, Says Harvey Smith

Immersive sim designer Harvey Smith shared how an unexpected multi-month delay for the original Deus Ex allowed Ion Storm Austin to give a major role to the iconic NPC Gunther Hermann.

In a recent interview on the NoClip podcast, designer Harvey Smith shared how a multi-month delay during the development of the original Deus Ex allowed the team to significantly expand the role of one of its most memorable characters, Gunther Hermann. Discussing the value of protected post-production time alongside Black Pony Immersive co-founder Ben Horne, Smith recalled how Ion Storm Austin requested extra development time from publisher Eidos over twenty years ago to tighten up the immersive sim.

According to Smith, the studio anticipated a difficult negotiation. However, Eidos was heavily distracted by chaos surrounding development events in Dallas, such as Daikatana. As a result, the publisher readily granted the team an extra five to six months of development time. Smith explained that this unexpected breathing room allowed the team to revisit characters who previously lacked proper narrative closure, including the cyborg NPC Gunther Hermann.

With the newly acquired post-production window, Smith was able to integrate Hermann into a major sequence in a Paris cathedral. By utilizing data links and triggers, developers created a dramatic encounter where Hermann taunts the player from a satellite link before a final showdown. This phase of development also solidified memorable elements such as the character's secret kill phrase. Smith emphasized that iconic moments like this would have been left on the cutting room floor without that crucial extension, highlighting the immense value of giving development teams additional time to polish their projects before launch.
