Deus Ex Creator Warren Spector Announces Retirement From Game Development

Industry veteran and immersive sim legend Warren Spector has announced his retirement from game development. In a post shared on LinkedIn, Spector revealed that he is stepping away as he approaches his 44th year as a developer, stating that the games business has changed and that it simply "isn't as fun" for him anymore.

Spector's extensive career spans nearly four decades, encompassing tabletop roleplaying games, board games, and roughly 17 full digital games alongside about nine add-on packs. Over the decades, he has worked across both major companies and startups, managing teams ranging from a dozen employees up to 800. His storied history includes working on foundational PC titles such as the Ultima series and System Shock under publisher Origin Systems, followed by his iconic stints at Looking Glass Studios and Ion Storm where he helped launch and direct influential titles like Deus Ex and Thief. Later in his career, he directed the Epic Mickey series at Disney Interactive Studios and more recently worked with OtherSide Entertainment on projects including Underworld Ascendant and Thick As Thieves.

Reflecting on his departure, Spector admitted to having mixed feelings and noted that there are still three specific games he would like to make—categorizing them as one very big game, one very small game, and one he does not know how to make that scares him. While he maintains a "never say never" stance regarding a potential future return depending on funding and a team, he believes it is time to step back, citing age, health, and a desire to make room for a new generation of developers. Moving forward, Spector plans to focus on writing books, reading, lecturing, consulting, and playing the piano.
