D&D Head Admits OGL Fiasco Was a Rug Pull and Recovery Will Take Time
Wizards of the Coast franchise head Dan Ayoub discusses the brand's public missteps, community trust, and a new direction for Dungeons & Dragons.

Dungeons & Dragons has experienced a turbulent few years following a series of public controversies. A new version of the Open Game Licence leaked in 2023, causing widespread concern among independent creators and giving Wizards of the Coast the ability to alter agreements for third-party creators. The company quickly walked back the changes, but the situation initiated a lengthy period of repairing community relations. Dan Ayoub stepped in as the new head of the D&D franchise at Wizards of the Coast in late 2025.
In an interview with Wargamer, Ayoub addressed the state of the brand directly. Bluntly, we are recovering from a lot of missteps, very loud, very public missteps, Ayoub said. And we are not going to fix it in one year. I can talk til the cows come home, but we have got to show more than tell, and that is going to take some time. I am very conscious that it is going to take a lot of time to win back the trust to the extent that I would like.
Ayoub acknowledged that the Open Game Licence fiasco was a rug pull that damaged businesses and eroded brand trust. He noted that the team lost sight of its audience and what made the game successful over the course of several years. Since taking charge, Ayoub has established a community council and spent time talking with fans, retailers, and consumers.
Changes have already taken place behind the scenes. D&DBeyond shifted its focus toward improving existing 2D offerings rather than pushing its Sigil 3D tabletop project. Wizards of the Coast has also pursued partnered content with third-party creators instead of attempting to compete with them directly, and the company plans to bring in partners to help write core source books.
Despite positive changes, challenges remain for the broader organization. Hasbro has engaged in union busting behavior, though the UWOTC-CWA union was formed afterward. Ayoub recognizes that rebuilding trust will be a gradual process, but he hopes fans will grant the team the benefit of the doubt as they demonstrate a new spirit and direction.
