Dark Souls 2 finally gets seamless co-op after 12 years

A new mod called Dark Souls 2: Seamless Co-op lets up to six players adventure together without fog walls, disconnections, or forced session restarts.

Dark Souls 2 players can now experience the full game in co-op without the friction that has defined the series for over a decade. Modder Yui released Dark Souls 2: Seamless Co-op into alpha last week, fundamentally changing how multiplayer works in the 2014 title.

The mod supports up to five additional players, meaning six people total can explore together. Unlike vanilla Dark Souls 2, where co-op sessions end when a player dies and fog walls separate zones, Seamless Co-op removes these interruptions. When someone dies, they respawn at their last bonfire instead of ending the session. Progression stays synced across all players.

"With this, it's theoretically possible to play the game from the tutorial up to the final boss completely in one co-op session," the release notes state. Players access co-op features through unique items like Pharros' Heliograph and Petrified Fingers rather than standard summoning mechanics.

Yui, who previously created similar mods for Elden Ring and Dark Souls, has already pushed patches after launch. One fix addressed a major performance issue affecting Intel processor users. The modder continues updating the project on Nexus Mods and Patreon, making this a fundamentally easier way to experience Dark Souls 2 with friends compared to coordinating traditional co-op.
