Dark Matter Season 2 Showrunner Discusses Venturing Beyond the Novel and Season 3 Ambitions

The creation of Dark Matter season 2 presented a unique creative challenge for the team behind the Apple TV science fiction series. While the mind-bending first season of the show closely adhered to Blake Crouch's original novel of the same name, the lack of a second book meant that season 2 had to forge an entirely new path without a preexisting roadmap. Speaking with GamesRadar+ at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, showrunner Blake Crouch admitted that the process was initially difficult, but ultimately proved liberating.

“Well, at first it really sucked,” Crouch shared. “It made it a lot harder. But once we jumped over that initial hurdle, it was totally freeing because we weren't locked into things that the book demanded us to do. So we got to follow our fancy a little bit more and write a few episodes that would never have existed in season 1.”

Season 1 followed physicist Jason Dessen, portrayed by Joel Edgerton, after he was kidnapped by his own alternate-reality self. Following his reunion with his wife Daniela, played by Jennifer Connelly, and their son Charlie, played by Oakes Fegley, the family departed for a new world. Season 2 picks up with the Dessens settling into a secluded new home, though the vast multiverse ensures that new threats remain ever-present.

Debuting initially in 2024, Dark Matter offered audiences a more cerebral and grounded alternative to other contemporary multiversal projects by focusing on the unpredictable consequences of opening Pandora's box. Looking beyond the current episodes, Crouch reaffirmed his long-term vision for the science fiction drama, emphasizing that the narrative has always been structured around a three-season arc. Whether the series continues past its current run will ultimately depend on the fans and the streaming platform's decisions.

Dark Matter season 2 streams on Apple TV, with new episodes releasing weekly following its August 28 debut.
