Dan Houser's Absurd Ventures Readies First Games After Seven-Year Hiatus
Former Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser is preparing to unveil two new titles from Absurd Ventures, including an open-world comedy and a dystopian sci-fi game, marking his return to game development after leaving Rockstar in 2020.

Dan Houser, a co-founder of Rockstar Games and a key creative force behind some of the best-selling games ever made, is preparing to unveil his next projects. After more than seven years away from active game development, Houser is set to return with two new titles from his independent studio, Absurd Ventures.
In a recent interview with Variety, Houser revealed that one of the upcoming games is an open-world comedy that leans heavily into humor and character development. The other is a dystopian sci-fi adventure centered around a video game development gone wrong, featuring a rogue AI that gains sentience. Both titles are part of Absurd Ventures' broader multimedia ambitions, which include graphic novels, live-action productions, and books.
Houser left Rockstar Games in 2020 following a reported disagreement with his brother, Sam Houser, who remains at the company. In 2021, he founded Absurd Ventures with the goal of building a multimedia empire. The studio formally announced its involvement in game development in 2023, unveiling plans for a new universe called the Absurdaverse and an audio project titled A Better Paradise, which is also being adapted into a video game.
The two games discussed by Houser in the Variety interview align with previously teased projects. He described the open-world comedy as focusing on comedy and character memory, with more details expected in the coming months. The dystopian sci-fi title explores themes of artificial intelligence and creative conflict, following two developers who dislike each other and create an AI that mirrors their discord.
Houser reflected on his time at Rockstar, particularly the pressure of developing Grand Theft Auto titles. He emphasized that his approach to creative work remains unchanged, prioritizing integrity and personal satisfaction over commercial success. His comments come amid renewed interest in former Rockstar talent pursuing independent projects, though not all have found success. Leslie Benzies, a former Rockstar North president, faced challenges with his studio Build a Rocket Boy and its poorly received title Mindseye.
While no specific release dates or platforms have been announced for Houser's upcoming games, the studio's multimedia approach suggests a coordinated rollout across multiple formats. Fans of Houser's previous work, including Red Dead Redemption 2, are watching closely as Absurd Ventures prepares to share more details in the months ahead.
