Pearl Abyss Slows Crimson Desert Updates to Focus on DLC Development

Developer shifts resources from regular free updates to the upcoming paid expansion following the game's strong launch performance.

Pearl Abyss is scaling back the frequency and scope of free updates for Crimson Desert as it redirects development resources toward the game's upcoming downloadable content, according to PR and marketing director Will Powers in an interview with IGN.

The shift follows the recent reveal of Crimson Desert Enhanced, which includes a substantial 2.0 update adding deeper narrative elements and serving as a soft rebrand marking the culmination of post-launch improvements. Powers described the 2.0 update as a "fully realized experience within the world" of Pywell, but noted that future updates will not maintain the same "scope, scale, and pace" as the regular content drops released over the past five months.

"While there still will be updates, I don't think the scope, scale, and pace of them will be as consistent past this point," Powers explained. "What we're taking this opportunity to do is shift our development resources from these regular updates to focus on the upcoming DLC."

The unnamed DLC is still slated to launch later this year. The studio's pivot comes on the heels of Crimson Desert's commercial success, which prompted Pearl Abyss to report a 94% increase in labor expenses due to performance bonuses distributed among 1,035 employees. No concrete details about the DLC's content or structure have been disclosed.
