Creative Assembly Defends Controller Support for Total War: Warhammer 40,000
Total War developer Creative Assembly says controller support for the upcoming console version of Total War: Warhammer 40,000 works well.

Real-time strategy games have historically relied on mouse and keyboard inputs. However, developer Creative Assembly is committed to bringing Total War: Warhammer 40,000 to consoles with full controller support. Speaking with TechRadar at Gamescom, battle product owner Dave Petry stated that the idea of controllers failing to work for the RTS genre is a myth. He noted that the studio has landed on a setup that genuinely works.
Petry framed the gamepad as an input method and accessibility tool that caters to how players want to play. He highlighted previous console RTS titles, including Creative Assembly co-developed game Halo Wars 2, as examples of strong controller implementation. When discussing the genre's typical micromanagement hurdles, Petry noted that Total War separates base building and tech trees into its turn-based campaign layer, leaving only battles in real time.
While fine micro-management actions might feel different on twin sticks, Petry expressed pride in the technical implementation and stated that the team feels confident in its current spot. Creative Assembly intends to keep evolving the experience as development continues toward release.
