Remedy Confures Plenty of Lore in Control Resonant Despite Combat-Focused Trailers
Developer Remedy assures fans that Control Resonant will be packed with lore, even though promotional footage has focused primarily on combat.
Fans of the Control universe can rest easy knowing that Control Resonant will feature an abundance of narrative depth and lore, according to developer Remedy. While promotional footage and sneak peeks released so far have leaned heavily into the game's combat mechanics, senior communications manager Miika Huttunen explained that keeping the story side under wraps until release is a deliberate choice. Huttunen noted that combat is simply something that does not need to be revealed gradually, whereas the narrative features plenty of weird elements, twists, turns, and surprises.
According to Remedy, players will uncover the story through dialogue with NPCs, environmental clues, and scattered collectibles. FBC documents and written materials dating back to pre-Hiss-invasion times are hidden throughout the world, rewarding thorough exploration. Furthermore, Control Resonant will reflect player decisions in dialogue through subtle character reactions, side quest variations, and the gradual shaping of the protagonist's personality. The main narrative remains largely linear and builds toward a distinct ending.
Gameplay details highlight a paranatural protagonist named Dylan, who navigates an unrecognizable Manhattan featuring gravity shifts and grotesque enemies. Dylan's journey includes consuming the Mold and unraveling his own mysterious past, present, and future. Combat relies on aggressive strategies utilizing the Aberrant shapeshifting melee weapon and paranatural abilities, with health recovered exclusively by defeating enemies. Players can also retreat to a liminal space called The Gap to practice moves, adjust loadouts, use Artifacts for boosts, and upgrade abilities, though returning to the real world resets and strengthens enemies to match the player's progression.
