Control Resonant reviews praise bold genre shift and Remedy's signature style

Critics are calling Control Resonant a successful gamble. The sequel shifts from action-adventure to character-action RPG and delivers strong combat design, art direction, and storytelling that builds on the original 2019 game.

Control Resonant is out next week, and early reviews are in. Remedy Entertainment's sequel takes the franchise in a notably different direction, moving from action-adventure into semi-open-world character-action RPG territory. Critics say the shift largely works.

Multiple reviewers praise the game's combat design and visual presentation. One noted that Control Resonant features "some of the strongest art direction you'll find in a game this year," while another highlighted "impeccable combat design" at the heart of the experience. The game's new protagonist and expanded scope also drew approval, with one critic calling it "a sequel that builds beautifully on the original" and placing it "comfortably among the best games of 2026."

Remedy's distinctive creative voice remains a strength. Reviewers consistently emphasize the studio's signature style shines through despite the genre changes. One wrote that Control Resonant "feels like a Control game in all the most important ways," while another called it "endlessly stylish and playful" and "an impeccably confident and tantalising sequel."

Not all aspects landed equally. One reviewer flagged repetitive combat as a limitation that prevents the game from reaching true greatness, though they noted this flaw doesn't override Remedy's achievements elsewhere. The PS5 Pro version specifically impressed at least one critic for its visual quality.

Control Resonant launches next week across platforms.
