Chronicles Medieval Mixes Authentic History With Action Strategy for 2027 Release
Raw Power Games previewed Chronicles Medieval at Gamescom, showcasing its blend of historical accuracy, tactical strategy, and third-person action RPG elements ahead of its 2027 PC launch.
Developer and publisher Raw Power Games is developing an action strategy game titled Chronicles Medieval, set within the context of the Hundred Years' War. The title is scheduled for release on PC via Steam in 2027. Lead producer Sam Millen and senior game designer Gareth Bourn recently discussed the project during a hands-off demonstration at Gamescom.
According to the development team, the project is driven by history enthusiasts. The game features an accurately researched map of Southern England and broader European territories. Settlements are placed based on real historical data, starting at the scale they were during the period. The world map consists of 209 regions, with undiscovered areas hidden under a parchment-style fog of war. Authenticity extends to military details, including historically accurate coats of arms, weapons, and armor. The studio worked alongside historians and utilized an in-house historical European martial arts expert to ensure period correctness.
While historical accuracy is a primary focus, the team has balanced it with gameplay enjoyment. Certain unrealistic actions, such as using a lance while on foot, are prohibited, while other atypical choices are permitted to preserve entertainment value. The game combines tactical strategy with third-person action role-playing mechanics. Skirmishes begin with a bird's-eye view where players position units and pre-programme maneuvers, such as cavalry flanking routes. Once planning concludes, the perspective shifts to a third-person view. Players can control their main character directly, issue commands in slowed time, and participate in combat personally through mounted charges or close-quarters brawls.
Progression systems reflect the fantasy of rising through the military ranks. Players begin with limited funds, basic weapons skills, and inexperienced peasant recruits. Winning battles grants the player new combat attacks, while surviving units improve their cohesion and form tighter, more effective formations. Additional immersive features include realistic physics for cavalry charges, where mounted knights must pull away from combat to regroup. The game also incorporates a mechanic called horse refusal, inspired by historical battle dynamics where horses occasionally hesitate to charge directly into conflict.
The feudal system and its associated hierarchy of vassals, barons, counts, dukes, and laws are integrated into the game through systemic features designed to reflect historical living conditions. Raw Power Games aims to deliver a detailed world where small mechanical touches complement the overarching strategic warfare experience.
