China's video game market generated $51.8 billion in revenue during 2025, according to a new report from Niko Partners. This figure vastly outpaces the UK gaming industry, which brought in $8.76 billion the same year, marking a significant shift in global gaming economics as the Western industry continues to struggle.

Niko Partners forecasts sustained growth in the Chinese market, predicting a 4 percent increase to $53.9 billion in 2026, with projections reaching $59.8 billion by 2030. The growth has been driven by stronger-than-expected performance from both new releases and established live-service games like Genshin Impact.

Notable examples of this momentum include Where Winds Meet, a 2025 MMO that surpassed 2 million players globally within a day of its release. The research found that 46.5 percent of Chinese gamers engaged with esports to some degree, with that figure expected to rise to 51.3 percent in 2026. Additionally, 80 percent of gamers have played mini-games, which account for 20 percent of total spending.

Niko Partners identified several growth drivers, including generative AI integration in game development—with 60 percent of Chinese studios already using it, compared to Western resistance centered on artistic integrity and copyright concerns. The report also highlights growth in niche genres, increased out-of-app monetization, and a more favorable regulatory environment that may enable international companies to access the Chinese market via platforms like Steam.

Industry visibility grew at Gamescom, where over 60 Chinese games had a presence, including Phantom Blade Zero, A Whisper of Fall: Jinyiwei, and Sea of Remnants, underscoring the country's rising prominence in global gaming.
