Capcom Signals Push to Revive Dormant Franchises Following Onimusha's Million-Copy Success

Capcom has outlined plans to revitalize dormant franchises as part of its broader strategy to maximize corporate value. The publisher made the statement in an investor report released following the success of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which sold over one million copies in its first day and pushed total Onimusha franchise sales past 10 million.

In the official statement, Capcom described its approach: "In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven't had a new title launch recently. The company is working to further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content."

Onimusha: Way of the Sword marks the franchise's return after a 20-year gap since 2006's Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams on PlayStation 2. The new action title features legendary figure Miyamoto Musashi battling demons in a stylized take on Edo-era Kyoto, Japan, and is now available on PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

The success of the Onimusha revival has sparked speculation about which franchises Capcom might target next. Industry observers have pointed to series such as Ace Attorney, Dino Crisis—which has not seen a new release since 2003—Strider, Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, and Breath of Fire as potential candidates for revival. Capcom previously announced Mega Man: Dual Override for 2027 as another part of this re-activation strategy. There is also speculation that Okami's upcoming sequel may be connected to this initiative, though this has not been confirmed by the publisher.

Capcom has historically maintained close stewardship of its classic franchises, releasing steady streams of compilations, remasters, and re-releases. The publisher has also integrated classic titles into modern releases, such as the Fighting Pass system in Street Fighter 6, which distributes legacy Capcom games monthly to players.
