Cairn's first free DLC expansion, On the Trail: Deep Water, will launch October 29, 2026, as revealed at the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct. The expansion is the first in a planned series of free additions to the climbing game.

Deep Water introduces three new climbing locations. The cliffs of Haken and Ruka feature overhangs above water, which serves as a safety mechanism. Falling into the water has no consequences, allowing players to attempt challenging routes without punishment. The Lamu climbing gym provides a safer training environment for practising skills.

The expansion adds a new playable character, Marco, whose climbing style differs from the existing character Aava. Players can take either character into a new free roam mode that allows them to reload saves on the mountain, practise routes, and explore without pressure.

Cairn is currently 20% off on Steam until September 26. The base game received a 91% score in PC Gamer's review.
