Bungie has pledged to restore vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids after acknowledging the studio lost sight of its players in recent years. In a statement from studio head Poria Torkan and product head Josh Deane, the company said the decision to remove this content had lasting impact on player trust and enjoyment.

"Destiny is foundational to Bungie's future," Torkan and Deane wrote. "We have more stories to tell, new worlds to build, but we have to do it right and give our teams the time they need to do justice to this amazing universe." The commitment comes directly after fan outcry over the announcement that Destiny 3 is not in development, despite widespread assumptions that Bungie was working on a new entry in the franchise alongside Marathon.

The vaulted content locked in the Destiny Content Vault includes campaigns such as The Red War, locations, and raids that were removed following various expansions and updates. All players will have access to unvaulted content in the coming months, though the process is technically complex. Bungie explained that changes made to Destiny 2 since the Beyond Light expansion require updates to lighting, combat encounters, combatants, and other underlying systems to meet current stability and gameplay standards.

"Bringing this content back is not as simple as restoring old files," the studio said. "That work will take time, but it is necessary to ensure returning content meets the stability and gameplay standards of Destiny 2 today."

In the video accompanying the statement, product head Deane addressed the paid content that was removed, calling the unvaulted items "what's rightfully yours." He acknowledged the difficulty of the restoration effort. "It's going to take some time. I wish we could just flip a freakin' switch," he said. "But we're going to commit to unvaulting the Destiny 2 campaigns, the destinations, the raids that never should have been ripped away to begin with."

Bungie acknowledged the broader challenges the studio has faced. "We lost trust, we lost incredible colleagues, and we lost sight of what we should be prioritizing most, our players," Torkan and Deane said. The studio laid off approximately 290 employees earlier in 2026 following the final Destiny 2 update.

As for Marathon, Bungie conceded the extraction shooter "did not reach as many players as we had hoped" since its March launch. Despite middling player adoption and strong reviews, the studio remains committed to the game's future. Bungie plans to evolve Marathon "beyond the genre constraints" it initially placed on the game, expanding its appeal beyond extraction-focused gameplay.

A permanent PvE mode and social space are scheduled for December as part of the Symbiosis update. An experimental Team Deathmatch mode will also arrive, broadening the experience beyond risk-based extraction encounters. Bungie indicated that more details about Marathon's future vision would be shared in the coming weeks, with an October Nightfall Refresh update also planned.

More information about Destiny's long-term future will be revealed in the months ahead, according to the studio.
