Bungie has released a detailed roadmap for Marathon's future, outlining major updates from October 2026 through March 2027. The roadmap reflects the developer's response to player feedback, acknowledging that the game's PvEvP pressure doesn't suit all playstyles.
The developer recognizes that Marathon attracts different types of players: some prefer casual experiences, others seek challenges, some want to test builds, and some prefer pure player-versus-player combat. To accommodate these preferences, Bungie is evolving Marathon beyond its current extraction shooter format toward connected PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences with varying intensity levels.
October 2026 brings the Nightfall Refresh, described as a focused update designed to improve the current experience. The major changes arrive in December with the Symbiosis update, which introduces a dedicated PvE experience where players can explore, experiment, and tackle challenges without pressure from other hunters. The update also adds an experimental Team Deathmatch mode offering a lower-commitment way to compete without risking a full run, plus a new shell called Bishop. This high-performance samurai-inspired shell is built around speed, surprise, and devastating melee damage bursts.
March 2027 marks the game's largest evolution, delivering an interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences. This update will include a new onboarding experience, refactored Cradle progression system with deeper shell customization, more focused questlines and narrative, new alien combatants designed to challenge player cooperation, and an entirely new zone described as pushing players deeper into the unknown.
Bungie is also rethinking how Runners interact with their Cradle to provide more freedom in shell progression and specialized roles. The core PvEvP experience will remain available throughout these changes.
