Bungie Plans Major Marathon Overhaul for March 2027
Bungie is reshaping its extraction shooter Marathon with a series of updates leading to a significant March 2027 revamp, adding PvE and solo play options alongside the existing PvEvP focus.

Bungie has outlined an ambitious roadmap to evolve Marathon following its March 2026 launch. The studio says it has been reviewing player feedback and plans to expand the extraction shooter beyond its core PvEvP format.
"PvEvP will remain an important part of Marathon, but it will become one point in a connected set of survival experiences," Bungie wrote in a blog post. The developer is building connected PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences alongside options for solo players and crews.
Three major updates will lead to the March 2027 revamp. A Nightfall Refresh arrives in October, followed by the Symbiosis expansion in December. The March 2027 update will introduce deeper progression systems, a refactored Cradle, a new onboarding experience, additional narrative content, new enemies, and an entirely new zone.
Bungie says the March update represents a chance to demonstrate Marathon's full potential. The developer is continuing quality-of-life improvements and running focused experiments between now and then to refine the game.
This mirrors Bungie's approach with Destiny. After Destiny 2 struggled at launch, structural updates and the Forsaken expansion a year later revitalized the game. Bungie achieved similar success with the original Destiny following the critically acclaimed Taken King expansion in 2015.
The roadmap aims to attract both new and returning players while retaining experienced ones. Beyond March 2027, Bungie plans to build from a stronger foundation for Marathon's ongoing development.
