Bretonnia Rework Confirmed on Creative Assembly's List for Total War: Warhammer

Creative Assembly acknowledges that Bretonnia is due for an overhaul, comparing its current state to wine that hasn't aged well. The faction's mechanics lag behind other races in Total War: Warhammer 3, though the team says a rework will take time.

Creative Assembly has confirmed that a Bretonnia rework sits on its development agenda for Total War: Warhammer 3, though the studio stopped short of announcing when players can expect it.

Speaking about the faction's aging mechanics, the team acknowledged the gap between Bretonnia's original design and what the studio can now deliver. "We really enjoyed making it when we did, but as we skilled up, as individuals developed, and as the tools have improved, yeah, it shows its signs of age. It's certainly on our to-do list, it's on our radar, just like the Vampire Counts were," a Creative Assembly representative said.

Bretonnia was one of the original playable factions in the Total War: Warhammer trilogy, released years before the Vampire Counts received their own substantial update. The faction's core cavalry units remain strong, and its farm economy provides steady income, but newer races now offer far more mechanical depth and customization options by comparison.

The long wait for the Vampire Counts rework, which arrived alongside the Lords of the End Times expansion in September 2024, suggests patience may be required. Creative Assembly noted the studio has become more efficient at redesigning older content, though the team also acknowledged an inherent paradox: the better the tools and team become, the more content feels outdated by comparison.

"There are a lot of things on our list," the studio explained. "For the longest time Norsca and Vampire Counts were our top two. Now that those have been crossed off, it's still a list, there are still things we'd like to do, but we've gotten better over time."

The Lizardmen faction has been noted by players as another candidate for similar treatment, though Creative Assembly has not officially prioritized any specific rework beyond Bretonnia.

Lords of the End Times brought major additions to Total War: Warhammer 3's Immortal Empires campaign, including Nagash as a playable legendary lord with a unique progression system called the Black Pyramid. The expansion also introduced Neferata as a free legendary lord for the Vampire Counts and reworked that entire race's mechanics.

Creative Assembly has suggested that smaller lord pack DLC releases, similar to the Bhashiva addition, may become more frequent going forward. The studio indicated it still has unfinished business with the Warhammer setting, including potential content for underdeveloped factions and regions like Ind and Khuresh that already exist on the Immortal Empires map.
